Low-level accents and shielded downlights keep a café dim enough for evening and bright enough to read the menu.
The owner wanted the room to feel like the courtyard it opens onto: dark overhead, with light only where something happens.
Tables, the bar front and the planting are each lit separately with tightly shielded spots, and the ceiling is left dark. The evening scene runs at a fifth of full output, which is enough to read a menu and not enough to see the fixtures.
